Most of us know this song or may have heard it being sung somewhere:
” Under the canopy, under the canopy, under the canopy of God, my saviour will cover me, give me security; under the canopy of God..”
Yes! as the song states, we are only guaranteed TRUE SECURITY when we are under the canopy of God. Now one may ask, what kind of security are you talking about? The answer to this question is all forms of security including security of one’s life, family, business, property, future and even your cyber security.. Yes because there is nothing too great or too small for God to do. Nothing is impossible for Him. He can protect one’s life and also prevent one from falling prey to criminals.
And one may also ask what does it mean to be under the canopy of God ?
Let’s see the meaning of ‘canopy’ according to Wikipedia: A canopy is an overhead roof or else a structure over which a fabric or metal covering is attached, able to provide shade or shelter from weather conditions such as sun, hail, snow and rain.
To further answer the question, let’s take for example a familiar scenario (marriage ceremony, burial ceremony or the many forms of gathering we usually have in Nigeria), notice there is always provision for canopies for the purpose of covering and protecting people from the rain, heat of the sun etc. also for the purpose of identifying a particular group, association or class of people.
This is the same thing as being under the canopy of God. First in this case it means being on God’s side and identifying with Him which can only be achieved if one first SURRENDERS HIS/HER LIFE TO CHRIST and BECOME BORN AGAIN, only then can one have access to be under God’s canopy.
Isaiah 4:5-6 NIV
[5] Then the Lord will create over all of Mount Zion and over those who assemble there a cloud of smoke by day and a glow of flaming fire by night; over everything the glory will be a canopy. [6] It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain.

In conclusion, Just as one who does not belong to an association is unwelcomed or denied access to sit under the canopy provided only for members of that association at, in the same way, one that is not in Christ cannot be under the canopy of God which gives TRUE SECURITY.
